Exhibition spaces

The Representative Halls are the primary exhibition space of the Nitra Gallery. They hold exhibitions of both national and international significance – collective ones as well as presentations of the works of individual artists. Thematic exhibitions arise on the grounds of the research conducted by in-house curators, or by external curators invited to cooperate with the Gallery. The Representative Halls also house projects that the Nitra Gallery collaborates on with allied domestic and foreign institutions.

Exhibitions of a more intimate character are held in the Nitra Gallery Salon. It offers space for budding as well as established artists from the Nitra region; small presentations, thematic exhibitions of artworks from the Nitra Gallery collection, exhibitions of contemporary design, scenography and applied arts, and presentations of art academies’ studios can be seen there. 

The Youth Gallery was opened under the administration of the Nitra Gallery in 1980. At that time, this form of exhibition space was unique in Slovakia since it served young artists from all over the country. In 2001, the Youth Gallery’s activities were revived in the space of a former utility staircase and an adjacent room. The Youth Gallery provides unconventional presentation opportunities for students and graduates of art academies, as well as budding curators from Slovakia and abroad.

The Bunker was created in the renovated premises of a disused underground civil defence shelter in 2008. The unique space offers opportunities to experiment with various media of contemporary visual art, enabling it to merge with other artistic forms. Whether these are installations, video projections, performances or musical concerts – the common feature is often the inspiration by and connection with this unconventional location.

The Colourful Gallery, founded in 2010, is our most recent exhibition space. It holds exhibitions related to the Nitra Gallery education program, consisting of works created by children and pupils in our studio during workshops and other child-centric activities, and of works sent to art exhibitions organised by the Gallery. Pupils and students of primary and secondary art schools exhibit their final works in the Colourful Gallery as well.
