Music

Rudolf Krivoš is one of the founding members of an important art group known as “Galandovci or the Mikuláš Galanda Group”.

The presented work called “Music” from NG’s collection was created in 1980s. The work carries the usual signs of the “Krivoš aesthetics”. What the viewer sees on the plywood is a dominant group of figures/musicians that are portrayed in the author’s typical archetypal style. The fact that they are musicians is suggested by picturing their musical instruments: a violin, a bass and a cymbalo. The overall impression given by the picture corresponds with the author’s visual language. Among the characteristic features of Rudolf Krivoš’ work are the use of different structures, layers, work with detail or earthy colour scheme. All of these give his works a very expressive character. It is also not uncommon to find sand used as a natural structure in some of his works, or layers upon layers of various varnishes. His painting approach carries signs of “roughness” – a strong symbolism of tension. His way of expressing himself moves from his figural inceptions to archetypal portraits of (mostly) women. His paintings are an authentic testimony to the search for our own purpose.

Rudolf Krivoš was born 16 November 1933 in Tisovec. During 1951-1956 he studied at the Academy Of Fine Arts And Design in Bratislava at the department of figural painting (led by prof. Mudroch). In 1957 the Mikulaš Galanda Group was created and they held their first manifestation exhibition. He took an active part in the group’s exhibition work. The group’s activities were terminated 1968 due to political reasons. Later he was expelled from official artistic organisations (1972 – the departure from the Slovak Union of Fine Artists). He started to withdraw from public life. Hi work can be labelled as one of the cornerstones of the Slovak painting modernism. The predominant part of his work is figural painting but he also finds himself in more monumental pieces related to sculpture and architecture. He is also not a stranger to intimate illustrator’s work. He lives and works in Bratislava.
