Martin Piaček entered the art scene after 2000 when he finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. One of the characteristic features of his work is connecting private and public motifs. His creative program is based on exploring and linking his own identity with the collective national identity while focusing on rewriting and revitalising our local history and reflecting on current cultural, social and societal themes. Even though his work usually features intermedia overlaps that might include digital prints, objects, performances and their photo or video recordings, the artist always places great emphasis on selecting a suitable material. He often works with traditional sculpture genres (mostly busts) and materials such as wood, bronze or marble. These reflect the artist’s sculpture education and necessity to bring new creative approaches to contemporary sculpture (chalked woodcut, etched marble and others).
