Due to the recent passing (16 January 2017) of Milan Adamčiak at the age of 70, we invite the visitors of the Virtual Gallery to explore a part of his work / scores that the gallery was able to acquire in 2007. Milan Adamčiak was a unique solitary character, a legend, an experimenter, a musicologist, a composer and a key figure of Slovak multimedia art. Adamčiak devoted his research to the visual relationship between music and fine art. He created experimental poetry, graphical scores. He was an active musician and performer. He created many “original” instruments, which can be interpreted as ready-made. The titles of both pieces /visual scores/ refer to music and its terminology. I find it appropriate to call the artist a Slovak “John Cage” (they knew each other personally). The Fluxus aesthetics typical for the unique work of the artist opens various possibilities for our own interpretation of the musical, visual and literary worlds.

Milan Adamčiak (16 December 1946 Ružomberok – 16 January 2017 Banská Štiavnica) Between 1962 — 1968 he studied cello at The Žilina Conservatory. Between 1968 — 1973 he studied musical science at the Faculty of Arts at the Comenius University in Bratislava. Since the late 1960s he was a distinctive member of the national art scene who kept in touch various international artists. He did not live long enough to see the big retrospective exhibition of his work that the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava is preparing for 2017.
