The Fetishes of Today

The publication was published as part of the curatorial exhibition project The Fetishes of Today which was held in the Representative Halls of the Nitra Gallery between December 14, 2018 and March 31, 2019. The exhibition presented Slovak and Czech artists, designers, writers and filmmakers reflecting upon various forms and themes of fetishes and fetishisation in contemporary society.

The bilingual Slovak and English catalog delivers a “manual” for understanding some of the current social phenomena related to fetishes that were presented at the exhibition. It serves as a theoretical extension of the visual part of the curatorial project. The catalog includes texts by the exhibition curators Ľudmila Kasaj Poláčková and Omar Mirza, a sexologist Dana Šedivá, a macroeconomist Tomáš Sedláček, an artist and education specialist Ladislav Čarný as well as short texts explaining the inspiration behind the works by Igor Ondruš and a short story by Peter Krištúfek. The appendix has the form of a short dictionary intended for everyday use.

Besides its documentary purpose, the publication follows the latest trends in graphic design. Its interdisciplinary textual dimension is supposed to guide us through and explain the need, point or pointlessness of human obsessions, (un)damaging deviations and rituals.
