Besides the artist’s own perception of the world, the On Board exhibition project also delivers a specific way to experience the painting process itself. His work focuses mostly on the relationship between the material of the image, what the depicted theme represents and how it is delivered thanks to the physical presence of the canvas. This age-old challenge of painting is related to various other factors: the creative process and experience of visual art, the ability to grasp and capture reality, the transfer of visual stimuli onto the canvas or the creation of new reality. To uncover these relationships, basic painting principles need to be applied. The painting itself thus becomes not just Juraj Kollár’s medium, but also the theme of his images. The often depicted grid becomes a screen he uses to capture and organise his visual perceptions into compositions. By working in cycles, he is able to keep looking for new ways of capturing these variable and temporary views. The sequences and variations of his images are defined by the continuous shifts in the viewer’s position. The metaphoric title of the exhibition serves as an invitation to a scenic cruise whose goals are focused observation and individual exploration.

Juraj Kollár (Nitra 1981) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (prof. Daniel Fischer, 1999 – 2003) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (prof. Zdeněk Beran, 2003 – 2005). He has received several national and international awards (Igor Kalný Award, Zlín 2009; Celeste Prize, 3rd Place, Berlin 2009; VÚB Painting of the Year, Bratislava 2010). His works can be found in various public and private collections both at home and abroad.
