Information

Besides projects and activities related to fine art, Nitra Gallery also opens its premises to other media. One of these projects is a series of talks with contemporary Slovak authors that Nitra Gallery started back in 2006. All of the talks in the previous years were moderated by the famous host Dado Nagy.

May 15, 2021 — FRANTIŠEK KOZMON
František Kozmon (1988) was born in Nitra. He studied mass media communication in Trnava and currently lives and works in Bratislava. He has participated at various short story competitions and experimented with different book genres. His crime story genre debut was The Last Case of Captain Čontoš that won him the Crime Story competition in 2014. His crime stories usually come with single-word titles: Rat, Frog, Wolf, Cuckoo or Heron. He published a new book in 2020 titled Worm.

July 20, 2021 — MICHAL HVORECKÝ
Michal Hvorecký (1976) studied aesthetics. He writes short stories, novels and blogs. His books have been published in eight languages. He also translates German novels and theatre plays. He works at the Goethe Institute. In 2009, he received the International Journalism Award in Berlin and in 2010, the Young Artist award of the Tatra banka Foundation Award for Art.

August 17, 2021 — PAVOL RANKOV
Pavol Rankov (1964) studied bibliology at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava where he also works at the Department of Library and Information Science. Besides teaching, he also works on different concepts and theories from the fields of mass media, advertising, information technologies and culture. (source: litcentrum.sk) He writes short stories as well. He made his debut with a collection of short stories titled With Hindsight (1995) that follows the traditions of national and international fantastic realism. In 2020, he became a laureate of the 14th annual European Book Prize for his title It Happened on September First (Or Some Other Day) from 2011 in French translation by Michel Chasteau.

The 15th annual series of talks will continue this autumn during the months of September and October when Nitra Gallery will host Jana Juráňová, Laco Kerata and Michal Tallo. Entry will be free.

Jana Juráňová

JANA JURÁŇOVÁ (1957) studied Russian and English at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava. She has worked as a dramaturgist at a theatre in Trnava, deputy editor-in-chief at Slovenské pohľady [Slovak Views] (1991 – 1993), commentator at Slobodná Európa [Free Europe], editor of various book projects, etc. In 1993, together with other female co-workers, they founded Aspect, a feminist cultural, educational and publishing project. She has been its coordinator ever since. Her works have been translated into English, German, Hungarian, Slovenian and Swedish.

Laco Kerata

LACO KERATA (1961) graduated in theatre directing from the Academy of Performing Arts where he also gained his doctoral degree in dramaturgy. In 1991, together with Blaho Uhlár and Miloš Karásek, they founded the legendary avant-garde Stoka theatre where he worked until 2002 as an actor and co-author of about fifteen plays. Later, he founded the theatre association MED – My Experimental Drama. He has written more than twenty theatre and radio plays and published several poetry collections, “Sinful Sleep” and “I Came, I Saw” and dramas “Radio Plays” and “Dinner Above Town” that were published as a book. Another publication was a short story collection titled Doing Alright and a novel Bad Actor that competed in the finale for the Anasoft Litera award in 2010 and was also published in Czech. In 2013, another collection of short stories called Short Ones was published and a novel titled I Am Still Here and Will Be came out in 2014. The Czech national radio has aired several of his original radio plays since 2015. The Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra presented his play “Goodness” in 2017. In 2019, a novel titled “Dry Years” was published. In 2020, a collection of short stories titled “On the Edge of My Mountain” came out and competed in the finale for the Anasoft Litera award.

Michal Tallo

MICHAL TALLO (1993) made his book debut with a collection titled Antimita (2016, Drewo a srd) and in 2018, the same publishing company put out another of his poetry collections, Δ. He has worked on several film and literary festivals and coordinates the Poems SK/CZ competition. He has co-founded the international literary festival Novotvar, co-leads the Lentikular poetry department at the BRAK publishing company. His work has been translated into several languages and published in different foreign anthologies; in 2018, the Krok publishing house issued a Ukrainian translation of his Antimita collection. In 2020, he was nominated for the international Vávlac Burian Award. He regularly hosts author readings and debates on contemporary literature and film. He issues poems, prose and texts on films or books in magazines and radio stations both at home and abroad (Vlna, Glosolália, Vertigo, Kapitál, Tvar, A2, Listy and others). He occasionally translates contemporary English and American poetry. His latest collection, The Book of Dark, will be published in the autumn of 2021 by Literárna bašta.
