Your problems on our shoulders

The exhibition Your Problems on Our Shoulders is a group presentation of selected students and graduates of the Studio of Graphic and Visual Design at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, which led by Patrik Ševčík since 2014. Eight female authors “coming out” of this studio present themselves to the gallery visitor mainly through the phenomenon of the artist’s book. 

The artist’s book is a unique book medium that has a significant position in art. Its uniqueness lies in pushing the boundaries of the traditionally understood book as an object and mediator of particular information. Principally, it is not a book about art, and it is not “just” an art book, but has its own separate position in artistic expression. The artist’s book is a fusion of the traditional book and the art book aspect, thus acquiring broader symbolic, interpretative and aesthetic meanings. 

In the selected collection of works, the young authors try to find their own artistic expression through themes that are their own – environmental, sociological or psychological, inseparable and present in their journey of self-discovery and presentation – it is also a showcase of the ten-year development of the Department of Graphic Arts and the Studio of Graphic Arts and Visual Design at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica under the direction of Patrik Ševčík. The exhibition Your Problems on Our Shoulders is not a lament, but a reminder of the facts that surround young women, whether it is just a particular moment, a long-lasting situation or everyday reality. The exhibition project is part of the anniversary exhibitions in the Nitra Gallery. The presentation of the studio led by Patrik Ševčík (*1974, Nitra) is not an intentional one, because in this anniversary year the Nitra Gallery is trying to draw the public’s attention even more to the artists who are variously connected with the Nitra region. 

It is also no coincidence that the majority of the gallery’s exhibition projects will be curated by a curatorial duo. It is a natural human and professional need and reaction to complement each other, to get to know (each other), to support each other and to have a respectful dialogue at work.
