The exhibition project “As You Don’t Know Them” is a reaction to the medium of hanging picture or painting as a more familiar and profane medium. Four young female authors Dita Kaplanová, Patrícia Koyšová, Kristína Šimeková and Lucia Tallová, trying to influence the entrenched ideas about the meaning and function of this medium, introduce site-specific realisations at the Youth Gallery of The Nitra Gallery. This project is more or less based on their previous work.

Notions of time, timeliness, memory or personal archaeology dominate the work of Dita Kaplanová. She uses technologies and materials rather reverting the process of making a classical painting, where the portrayed subject quickly disappears or conversely suddenly appears, using the principles of archaeology.

Patrícia Koyšová explores the relationship of colours and subconsciousness by looking for the borderline of kitsch and “high art”, or by exploring the extent of the impact of spontaneous painting and expressive gesture, absolving from any aestheticism. The accumulated information and emotions come to the author’s testimony almost accidentally.

The works of Kristína Šimeková are some kind of automatic, intuitively generated organisms, a segment of a parallel reality. Quite naturally, she exceeds the surface of the painting, accumulates structures and shapes, and pushes the intensity of colours to the limit of tolerance and good taste. She attacks the viewer in such a way in which he or she is used to, or vice versa, reflecting the state of contemporary visual culture.

Lucia Tallová uses the traditional medium of painting or hanging picture and a hand-made decorative lace to create compositions combining often unrelated elements into entities. Darkness and chiaroscuro of the cold city immersed in fog or a forest landscape contrast with the softness of lace and clarity of light. She reacts to her own experiences, traditions and deep-rooted opinions on femininity. At the same time, she offers the viewer a space for self-identification.
