The exhibition in the Youth Gallery of the Nitra Gallery presents three works by Magda Stanová: In the Shadow of Photography (“V tieni fotografie”); The Moment when Everything was Possible (“Moment, keď bolo všetko možné”) and Lady with Two Heads (“Dáma s dvomi hlavami”).
The work In the Shadow of Photography (2007-2009) contains texts, drawings, collages, found photographs, animation and video. In this visual essay, the artist analyzes the specifics of the photographic medium and examines how it changed our view of the world. She thinks about how this magical phenomenon of the past turned into today’s omnipresent deluge of holiday shots, snapshots of family or friends’ reunions that are still able to carry certain value for us in spite of their quantity and easy accessibility. The visitors will learn for example why people have stage fright while being photographed, how you can travel in time with the help of photography, or why we lost the possibility to acquire an authentic experience when we attempt to preserve it. The artist comments on and clarifies these questions with a certain distance, intelligence and humor; however, she leaves space for the viewers’ ideas and imagination so that they could find the answers themselves.
The works The Moment when Everything Was Possible and Lady with Two Heads belong to a larger series titled Algorithms in Art (“Algoritmy v umení”, since 2010). In her lecture shows and guided tours the artist employs knowledge from various scientific disciplines to introduce us to new ways of looking at the process of art creation, at the artwork itself and how it is perceived by viewers. Exhibited are various props used in these performative lectures that connect art with science and the viewers with the artist in an untraditional, innovative and creative way. They add other meanings to the exhibition, therefore we definitely recommend you to come and experience them live.
