The Story is an exhibition without an instruction manual on how to look, perceive, feel, read, or interpret, or what emotion it should or should not evoke.
The inherent visuality and playfulness of the exhibition draw the viewer into a unique narrative in which nothing is black and white, and where every exhibited work conceals its own story—stories that are hidden, complex, intricately branched, or even absent; or, conversely, stories that are simple, clearly legible, and even predictable.
Intertwined stories, separate stories… they form a single whole, a single (?) story within the space.
The exhibition is primarily intended for a young audience, unburdened by the accretions of convention and stereotype. Childlike playfulness, naivety, and the capacity to weave personal narratives under any circumstances, as well as to connect the unexpected, are frequently encountered in the work of the exhibited artists. Often through the lens of humour and audacity, irony, and self-reflection, yet also through sadness, they seek—much like children—their place within the family, society, the country, and the history of art itself…
The never-ending story of imagination within the works from the collections of the Nitra Gallery is accentuated by the “spray art – spray paintings” of the renowned Slovak illustrator Petra Lukovicsová. “Graffiti” executed directly onto the gallery walls dismantle established notions while simultaneously bridging disparate visions; and, naturally, let us not forget the surprise within the “black hole”.
Imagination knows no bounds…
