Rudolf Sikora
Topic: From His Own Work

Rudolf Sikora was born in Žilina and grew up in the region of Spiš. Later, he moved with his family back to Žilina where he studied at the secondary general-education school. Between 1963-1969, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and at the same time, he was also doing a two-year study of scenography at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He studied at APA under the leadership of professor Peter Matejka at the Department of Monumental Painting and Tapestry. After finishing his studies, Sikora founded the famous Open Studio and organised an exhibition titled “A Series of Topography: Koller, Sikora, Meliš”, which has been known as a turning-point event on the fine art scene after 1968. In the 1970s, he was not allowed to exhibit for political reasons, but despite being offered work at Academie des beuax-arts in Paris, he did not emigrate as he was concerned about the impact it might have had on the study opportunities of his younger siblings and he also wanted to remain active on the Slovak art scene. He worked with activist groups, mostly environmentalists and ecologists. In 1988, during the so-called perestroika, he was allowed to join the Union of Fine Artists together with other artists who had been prohibited up until that point. On November 19, 1989, he participated at the preparations of a protest rally at the Art Forum and he also played his part in creating the Public Against Violence movement. After the revolution, he worked as an advisor to the ministries of culture, Ladislav Chudík and Ladislav Snopko. He also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU) and the Film and Television Faculty at the Academy of Performing Arts (AMU) in Prague. In 1990, he left the Public Against Violence movement to pursue his engaged art interests.
