To mark the occasion of his 60th birthday, Jozef Dobiš introduces a selection of his work that covers the broad spectrum of fine art production he has engaged with throughout his career.
Jozef discovered an interest in a number of differing artistic genres during his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. It is in this starting point of youthful eclecticism that we can see how such abundant and varied interests have shaped his direction in the years that have since followed.
After Dobiš’s graduation, he dedicated himself to en plein air painting using acrylic and oil as his favoured mediums. His artwork is dominated by vedute of Nitra as well as comprehensive views of Nitra, a location that is inseparably connected with the castle and its surroundings. The artist’s figurative works carry the signs of new figurative paintings.
The artist has also been devoting himself mainly to graphic design for a longer period of time, designing brands, posters and graphically editing publications, catalogues and book covers. He also directs his interest to independent graphic art. He is the author of many art-spatial solutions of various expositions for several institutions and firms.
In his current independent paintings and graphic works, he uses elements of Lettrism and manipulated photography with digital printing outputs.
Jozef Dobiš was born in Topoľčany on the 24th February 1955. In 1969 – 1974 he studied applied graphics under the leadership of Gabriel Štrba at the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava. In 1978 he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava under the leadership of doc. Milan Rašla and prof. Oto Ľupták. After completing his university education in 1984, he started to work as a teacher at the Faculty of Education, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, where he still works to the present day. In the period of 1997 – 2010 he held the position of the Head of the Department of Creative Arts and Art Education at the Faculty of Education, CPU in Nitra. In 2002 – 2003 he held the position of Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. He teaches disciplines with the focus of graphic design and graphics. He also works as a specialist teacher of graphic design at a private secondary art school in Nitra. He is a member of the Art Association N’89. He has had solo exhibitions since 1985 and regularly takes part in collective exhibitions with the Art Association N’89. The artist lives and works in Nitra.
