As We Don’t Know Them
The catalogue As We Don’t Know Them was published to accompany the exhibition of the same name, part of a series commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Nitra Gallery. This full-colour, 104-page publication includes a curatorial introductory essay, detailed annotations, high-quality reproductions of the exhibited works, and comprehensive profiles of the participating artists- Peter Bartoš, Martin Benka, Ladislav Čarný, Stanislav Filko, Ladislav Guderna, Július Jakoby, Alojz Klimo, Július Koller, Monika Pascoe Mikyšková, Miroslav Nicz, Milan Paštéka, Vladimír Popovič, Ester Šimerová-Martinčeková.
The concept of the exhibition is primarily rooted in the collection of the Nitra Gallery. Its aim is to highlight works by artists who, in various ways, diverge from the typical development of their oeuvre—whether in terms of content, form, visual language, iconography, or thematic treatment.
During the curatorial process, two distinct categories of such atypical works emerged. The first includes singular, anomalous pieces—unique works that stand apart within an artist’s body of work and are not representative of any specific period or stylistic phase. The second category comprises works that define a particular phase in an artist’s career (e.g., early works), which are often markedly different from the rest of their artistic production created in later periods.
The exhibition also engages with and expands upon the topic of the gallery’s acquisition activities, raising the important question of what acquisition strategy should be adopted by gallery-type institutions. It considers not only the supplementation of existing collections with works by established artists from older and middle generations, but also explores how to meaningfully approach the acquisition of works by contemporary artists in order to build a comprehensive representation of their creative output and the historical context in which they lived and worked.
